Since starting to build in 2008 I usually found myself with MiCargi steel frames. But even with basic engines I was managing to snap frames.
Ive tried having reinforcements welded in but still ended up cracking other places.
For this build I wanted to have a nice chill cruiser. Max 35mph and tuned for more like 25mph.
This is why I ended up with a 48 tooth rear sprocket.
That led me to search for a frame better suited for motors and I came across the Electra 7D, I found a lady who was selling one of facebook for $100, she took $80. It was in rough condition but perfect for what I needed it for, a complete build from the ground up.
This frame is an ideal candidate for a motor addition.
The rear dropouts are massive and the frame is a Large so there is more then enough room for an engine.
I didn't expect to find such a great frame suited for a motor and the more I looked at the frame, the more I knew I wanted to do a fresh build from the ground up. This would start with me getting the engine mocked up and fit before stripping the paint.
Once I got things where I wanted I started the tear down and paint stripping.
I decided to go with a Dark Ford Blue Dupi-Color Engine Enamel.
I followed that up with Dupi-colors Effects coating.
For the clear coat I used a 2 stage clear to be sure everything was gas resistant.
Added the 4L tank that is studless to avoid leaks. Funny thing is it leaked from new and I had to fix it.
Even a new the tank had quiet a few imperfections and waves in the metal. Took quiet a bit of bondo and sanding to get it right.
Engine:
I got a stock triple 40 engine on Amazon and split the case to rebuilt everything.
Mods:
- New bearings everywhere
- Case port matched and cleaned up
- Piston trimmed for full opening at TDC and BDC
- Intake and exhaust port cleaned up
- Crankshaft balanced to 55% balance factor and holes where weight was removed filled with JB weld
- Clutch main spring tightened
- All fasteners replaced with Belleville aircraft grade replacements
- Copper head gasket properly annealed
- Case gaskets removed and case halves matched for perfect fit
- Instead of case gaskets I got the fit right and used Ultragrey
- Doing this allowed me to not need shims in the crankshaft and clutch spring
- All seals replaced and backing plate used for magneto side
- CNC head
- NGK B6 plug
- Dellortro clone carb w/ 65 jet - no filter
Worked out great She can do 35mph like I wanted and vibrations are minimal with the crank balanced.
