Can i ride without a muffler

I was given an old 80cc engine and it runs fine, but the whole muffler broke at the port.anyways i was wondering if it would hurt it to ride a mile to work for a week so i can afford to buy a new muffler

if about 6 inches of pipe is still there, it should be OK - if nothing is there, then you could get cold air sucked back onto the hot piston which can cause 'heat shock' that can crystallize the metal permanently ruining it
