Can the heat from the muffler damage a shifter cable?

My build is some except for some tweaking but I noticed that one of the shifter cables (A small section of it) is very close to the top of the muffler were it is welded to the manifold pipe. Does the muffler get hot enough to melt it?

If you're concerned you can get a spring at the hardware store and rig it up around the cable as a shield, like how the clutch cable is set up.

If it's not touching, you're okay. It'll bounce against it with vibration etc but the spring will keep the vinyl from instantly melting, sticking, and making a worse mess.

My kit didn't have a clutch cable spring thingy, and the instructions never mentioned it. I noticed that, laying against the head, the cable sheath has melted somewhat, but it is metal lined on the inside and i am too lazy to fix it. Couple of hundred miles and it's still sliding just fine. I imagine that with a bare cable, there couldn't be a problem... to melt it, the muffler would have to be hot enough to melt itself, wouldn't it?
