For a kit I guess you'd half expect it to be quicker.

Everything takes time. If you want a good, reliable motorbike, you can't just slam things in willy nilly.
A few nights ago, I removed one link from my stretched 415 chain. It took two hours by the time I adjusted the chain tensioner and locked everything down.
Then I had to wash my hands.
