Clutch racing

I have a new Phantom 85 engine. It was running great with stock carb. I put a mikuni vm18 on with no air filter(wouldn't fit) It'll run but when I pull the clutch in it races so much I think it's going to blow up. Any Ideas why?

Air leak or too small of pilot jet.
