Did anyone invest in a DOT helmet and riding jacket?

I got lucky with mine. I walked into a pawn shop and they had a small in new condition for $20. IT is black and in this Texas sun and humidity, it gets rater toasty. Perhaps I ought to store it in the freezer.

Good that you got a helmet, Scott.
I went with Chrome - I live in FL....same sun, man, and it's HOT!
The chrome REALLY stays cool. My head doesn't even sweat.
Sell your black one, and pick up a more sun-friendly color on eBay...there's plenty of great deals out there.

Cartman

I wear a 3/4 Helmet almost has the cop or German war era helmet look but is slightly bulky kinda like fetors pic he he

Before I finished my weedwacker bike I drove my fat butt to the local cycle shop and spent he last $55 from my car sales money on a good half shell helmet in matte black. My significant other says like I look like a big black mushroom... However I cheated a major injury once when I was riding a regular bike and I'm not going to chance it again. I also knew that if I finished ANY of the bikes and didn't have a helmet that I would ride without.

I don't think it's a bad looking helmet and it keeps my brains in my skull, that's very important to me. :)

Dirtbike Helmets

Well, at first I scoffed at the idea of a helmet on a bike. helmets aren't cool, right? and then I was looking at the only helmets in my LBS, and they're cool looking skater helmets for 40 bux. I felt ok about that I guess. but then I did some super man stuff over the handle bars of my bmx bike the other night. Some A$$ hole put a big cast iron bezel thing in the middle of the beaten path, in the one dark section of the path. it sucked and my neck is still killing me. anyway, that kind of made me want a better helmet. I think I would feel kind of goofy with a full face motorcycle helmet, or a harley styleskull cap, or a german army style helmet, Then I came across the Dirtbike helmets. They're full face, yet open at the same time, have a big cool looking visor bill, and I think I wont mind wearing one. Here is a decent one for around 100 bux: http://www.helmetcity.com/page/HC/PROD/offroad/clx5nmatteblack
In the future when I finish tweaking the build and I have some more money, I will probably step up to a Shoei like this: http://www.helmetcity.com/page/HC/PROD/offroad/vmtpureorange

Now, as far as riding gear goes, I have not thought too much about it. I might be breaking out the Canadian Tuxedo (Denim jacket).

I ride both bicycles and motorcycles on a daily basis and have for over 50 years. I can tell you that it is only a matter of time before you go down. It the last 20 years, I've fallen twice, both times on a bicycle. Once was at a corner storm drain where someone had poured oil down it. That took me down hard and fast. My right cheek contacted asphalt and the stretching skin tore around my eye. It made an amazing mess. My helmet touched only at the lower edge.

The other time was in the pitch black of pre-dawn in January on the ice. Completely destroyed my Schwinn helmet. My right shoulder is still very crunchy, but the head was OK. These days I wear a thick polycarbonate half "stunt bike" helmet.

I had a Bell half-size bike helmet, then upgraded to a Snell 3/4 face black motorcycle helmet. With steel-toed black boots, carpet layer's shin pads and full leather gloves, I'm totally uncool but well protected. With temps in the high-80's, it's bearable.

Here's the one I wear. It's a Bell shorty helmet that comes with zip off ear flaps for when it gets colder out. I got it off of Ebay for $45 INCLUDING shipping. It's a DOT approved helmet. I also wear fingerless bicycling gloves. When it gets cooler out, I'll probably wear some type of protective jacket....

I've been riding for a good many years now; all different bikes from pedal cruisers, to my nighthawk. I wear the same helmet for all, but have different other gear for different bikes, and weather conditions. My armored leather I wear with the nighthawk, the cl 90, and the whizzer. I have armored leather pants for long distance on the nighthawk, leather chaps for the nighthawk, the cl-90. On my Motored bikes I wear my standard leather jacket, helmet, kevlar jeans, and good gel palm gloves. in decent weather. I also have cold gear for the fall, winter, and spring. After my best bro.s accident a few weeks ago, I am now a firm believer in wearing the gear.

I bought this DOT helmet before I ever rode my bike in SF:

It cost me a bit of money, but it fits well and suits me. Ideally, I would like to get a Corazzo jacket with armor. They are having a promotion this weekend at a local scooter company (Saturday) and I think I am going to max out one of my credit cards to get one of the 5.0 jackets (possibly the orange or khaki/red because they are so visible, though I would prefer to go with the Blue/Black).

I've tried them on and they're super nice, and not too heavy or warm, like leather. but for the same cost, I could get a nice leather jacket, so ... I am going to have to decide. Either way, it is a ton of money. I also have to look for some gloves.
