Exhaust Exhaust question

I have a 48cc engine mounted on a Schwinn SS Cruiser. Everything is great-except that the left pedal hits the exhaust. Any suggestions to remedy the problem?

I've tried to put the exhaust in the vise and bend it, but in order to keep the exhaust from moving-I have to crank the vise so tight that it mars the finish. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to see a welder to heat it enough to bend the pipe...?
