I'm gearing up for my first build, but I'm second guessing myself. I was/am considering using a Genesis Onyx 29",

. As far as a motor, I can't decide. I beleive I'd like a 4 stroke, but I have a budget.

Shooting for a budget cap. of $400. My main goals are durability and performance, with appearances being not as important. Any suggestions for a beginner?

The rule of thumb is this:
Performance, Reliability, Budget. Pick 2. You've obviously picked "budget" at $400 so you can't have reliability and performance also. And $400 is pretty low honestly. I think I'd be scouring craigslist first for a bike, pretty much every cruiser is made in china and their quality is on par with each other. Also, look in the for-sale section here for an engine. I think you'll sacrifice performance for reliability so stay away from the china-girl engines.

Consider buying a good used setup like this one:

This was just like my first engine build. It was perfect for me back then.

Then get a used quality bike from craigslist.

If there's a college nearby, place an ad on their bulletin boards. At the local university, there's a buyer who offers $20 to students wishing to sell their bikes.
