The one best piece of advice I can give you as far as welding is check out a book from the library to understand the concepts, basics, and shop safety. Then practice, Practice, PRACTICE...
I would have learned quicker if i had just sat around and run beads on scrap and joined scrap more than I did as practice work.
Then, go to the bookstore and pick up a book called "How To Weld Damn Near Anything"
It's a great help!!! I've learned also that your prep work and the ambient temperature are rather important to getting good welds...
When you get your rig just monkey about with junk, and practice by just playing with the welding equipment.
