I have a huffy trail runner full suspension MTB that I want to put a motor on, the trouble I’m running into is that it would have to be rear rack mount and I am concerned about how the chain would run with the motor being directly above the rear tire. This would be my first build (had to go the hard way) the bike was gifted by a friend so as of right now I don’t have anything financially into it. Link below is the bike in question

There is NO way in hell I would try to motorise that...You would have to make numerous changes and compromises to even try to get it to work right for you, ESPECIALLY if your a first time builder and are just coming to know all about this little hobby/sport of ours.

A friction drive is your best bet with that, but you will be spending a lot to do it right and you will still have to fabricate it

The only thing I can see being done to the bike is to build an electric using a hub motor. If you want gas, sell that bike and use the money to help pay for a bike more suited for a gas engine.

Will an electric build last as long? And will it be as cost effective to start with? The initial reason I was looking into gas powered (not friction drive) is the range and speed. This would end up being my main mode of transportation as my wife and I only have one car and she works a lot, I've been looking online for the month or so and seen a lot of crazy stuff

Could you provide some generalized examples of the compromises? I work remote so time to do this isn't really a factor, cost and planning are my biggest concerns

This is the same bike frame I used but I changed everything else out...lol.

Here is the "how too" tutorials I wrote after building mine as many others wanted to know how I did everything and where the parts came from and how much would it cost.

I'm building one too. It's a sweet frame. It's way thicker steel that any other bike in that price range. The stock wheels are pretty flimsy however.
