Gas tank design - and build!

Wow, thanks guys. I didn’t think the keg would get such high marks. I may work with that for now. I can always make the in frame tank later if I want to.
The wood idea is interesting... I do fancy myself as a bit of a woodworker. May give that some thought. An advantage would be some physical protection of the tank. Disadvantage is added bulk. This idea deserves some thought.

A huge beer can on the back of your bike, of course that's popular, what a cool custom look, what's not to like?

HDPE is the plastic that most gas cans are made of. You can find all kinds of containers made with HDPE, find a good size, then build around it using fiberglass.

Why haven’t I heard about this HDPE idea?

And while the vinyl wrap would be easy and for a lot of people a good choice. I gotta use wood. 👍🏻
I'd use wood too, but that's only because I like to work with wood and I haven't done a nice wood project for quite awhile.

Started working on the tank. The pictures generally tell the story, but a few highlights- cured linseed oil is incredibly resilient, no solvent touches it. Turns out good old petroleum and time does well. The can I used originally soldered the handle and filler nozzle so a blast with the torch and they fall right off. I considered the larger ‘brush in can’ abs glue can and cap but ultimately decided against it. I cut the top off the can but perhaps a better way would be to cut around the can and use it that way? Removing the red spigot is a PITA. Correction- the red piece pulls out with a strong putt and twist. The inner black piece is the stubborn one. I found that carefully cutting across the outside helps to give a grip and twist- careful though- if it falls in, you might never get it out. The small filler nozzle seems a bit flimsy so I soldered a an inner ‘tube liner thing’ - this was a pain and seemed dubious during the process, but ultimately proved to be a great thing. Next step is going to be soldering in a 1/4 npt female fitting for a petcock. questions?
