Gx160 problems

If you don't see anything unusual, just pull the rod cap off and inspect that. If there are no grooves, ruts or deep scratches in the cap, then you're good to go. Pay close attention to the way it came off, even though I don't think it will go on any other way with the oil flinger there.
 
Agree with Chainlube.

Clean cylinder, wipe with oil.
Use the same piston and rings.

Oil the rings before install.

If you change rings, you'll have to hone the cylinder.

If not, the rings won't seal.
 
Before you disassembled the engine,
did you try to start the engine,
minus everything(sheet metal, clutch, etc.)?

If not, ya might be chasing your tail.:(
