So, today I spent a long time getting rid of the chain tensioner. I put some washers under the engine and eliminated it entirely! The chain alignment is way better. and I haven't had a slip yet. I also continued to tweak the carb top end. I found that the best top end came with an incredibly lean setting, but my acceleration was real bad, so I found a compromise. Now it seems like the engine takes a minuet or so to warm up, but then it flies!
