Homemade 4 stroke (project lmz)

Earlier you were talking about swapping. In emissions areas you can only swap out engines/trannies that have the same VIN codes. You cannot change the emissions at all in order to be legal. Most times that means same year or very close or it won't be legal, huge PIA.

Are they gonna roll around under the thing to check? I doubt it. Besides, ky doesn't require emissions either.

I got an old VW van to pass emissions testing by running it on almost pure methyl hydrate. I poured two gallons in an almost empty tank and retarded the timing so it would run ok.

The guy at the testing station couldn't believe the numbers but didn't clue in and gave me the pass. So I got another year out of the worn out old thing.

They use a mirror, kind you see on prison shows checking under cars. I hear in CA they check the cat/s for being OEM and not aftermarket. You have to get up close and personal to do that.

CA. Smog Check
Yep Ca. will visually check your emission system and equipment
Inspect check engine light and any other check light on your dash
Check the on board diagnostics, & check engine timing etc...
Also stick a sensor up the tailpipe to check emissions

However if your car is pre 1975 you don't have to get a Smog check

W, I remember in 74 when CA 1st come out with smog regs. We had to put a sensor inline on the top radiator hose on a car we had. It had 2 vacuum lines going to it, timing maybe. Do you remember the orange colored smog police cars going around back then?

I do, I was going to college in Southern Cal back then...The sensors and vacuum thingy you speak of was called the NOx Device and it was mandatory that you had to get it installed on your cars back then...The cars all started running like crap when those things got put on.

That was when I realised that I would never stay in California after college was over as I could see government over reach even then when it was in its infancy stages and knowing it was going to be much worse as time went by.
