W, I remember in 74 when CA 1st come out with smog regs. We had to put a sensor inline on the top radiator hose on a car we had. It had 2 vacuum lines going to it, timing maybe. Do you remember the orange colored smog police cars going around back then?

Nope I was in Fla at the time then I moved to Hawaii until 2005 - No smog check in Hawaii

When I moved to FL in 1980, they had vehicle inspections, but mostly for functional things like proper headlight alignment and basic mufflers!

Yep Hawaii has safety check inspection, A yearly sticker ya have to put on your license plate along with the normal reg sticker

Insurance require to get a safety check but if ya go to the right service station and flash a $100 bill the guy will let ya use an expired insurance card ,
Don't ask me how I know that
