how tough are they? 25cc weedeater tough, 5 hp suzuki tough? 10 hp suzuki 250 twin 2stroke abomination tough?? or are there any ones to look for in perticular? ive rode bikes with them and they dont feel too tough, like you could strip the gears at any second.

Back when motorized bicycle track racing was common 3 speed hubs got used a lot. The Late KC Vale used them in several builds. However, I know of no builds using an engine over 80cc

shame. my other idea is to take a peerless 700 and remove every other gear tooth, increasing my chances of hitting a gear when i shift while the vehicle is moving. are there any mower transmissions that use dog type engagement, instead of shift keys? they could have every dog removed to allow for shift on the go

I've always wondered about this subject. Wouldn't Nuvinci and Shimano hubs be stronger then the mass produced geared hubs of years past that were on dept store bikes?

Generally, they are stronger but Nuvinci, Shimano, and Strumey Archer were designed to be able to withstand upper levels of human produced torque for a given load. What this means is if put a load on the hub beyond it's limits the torque from a large engine is going to strip the planetary gears out.

I currently have 3 builds using 3 speed hubs. One Nexus thru a 3hp Briggs, one Nexus thru the 98cc Villiers and one SA thru a Maytag twin. I have built others in the past. I have yet to break one. I do treat them with respect throttling back on shifts and they are run thru auto clutches which is easy on torque application. I have shifted under power to no ill effect. They are nice due to the fact gears can be shifted while stopped.

heres how we are gonna powershift in a peerless 700. as far as i know, you cant have the output shaft spinning when you shift. heres how i solve this. use a ratchet on the rear wheel, (E300 razors had a ratchet you could bolt plate sprockets to, ive got a few) and bump the transbreak before you shift, (with a lever behind your foot) if there isnt enough resistance in the grease, chain, idlers, etc to bring it to a quick stop. i will use a 3 speed, remove the entire reverse chain, sprockets, etc. atatch a front trigger shifter (3 spd) to the shift fan, in such a way that a spring pulls it int 3rd, and you pull it down into second, 1st. to grab nuteral , you just grab the lever atatched to the shift fan, and pust it into nuteral. the cable will flex, because it is in the push direction.
