Important clutch adjustment required for maximum grip.

Thank you FurryOnTheInside. I cleared out some grease today with a que-tip to better see into the hole. I rotated the wheel and still couldn't see any place to wedge my flat-head screwdriver through a full rotation. I tried placing the screwdriver into the hole in a left-right orientation and rotating the wheel backwards but it didn't fall into any groves. There was a front/back groove that the screwdriver fell into, but it felt like I was pushing into the spring; it felt wrong.

I'm confident that this method will solve my insufficient clutch grip.

I've ordered a puller to remove the mechanism and manually adjust it. When I remove the mechanism, should I be increasing the tension on the spring or decreasing it? I can't picture how it's working.

Thanks again for reviving an old thread. Appreciated.

It is possible they never put the preload nut on your engine when they assembled it.
You're supposed to be screwing the shaft through the preload nut, pulling the nut from right to left.

The preload adjuster is #16 and just has little notches in it.

So, it seems I was using too large of a screwdriver; a smaller one slipped into the grove seen in the diagram. I tightened the spring pre-load and there is a big difference in the feel of it. I actually snapped the tip of my screwdriver in there and only noticed later that it was irregular looking. Happy I got it out.

Reading around also made me realized how my clutch pads were very, very tight in the plate. I kept reading how they ought to 'float'. I could barely remove them to adjust them. In fact, they tore apart as I levered them out. I've ordered more and will be sure to trim / level them so that they are passively fitting.

Thanks a lot for your help.
