I know that a hub adapter is the best option, but I don't want to wait for one to come in the mail. So what can I do to improve thr rag joint to work.at full potential?

Cut shallow slits (grooves) in the rubber for the spokes to fit in
Use locknuts on the bolts

Aside from what Wrench said (which is totally valid) just keep making sure the bolts are relatively tight and even. They will loosen over time so it's important to revisit them and make sure they are torqued properly.

When I first put the rag joint together I didn't put the metal plates on the back. It seems.to have held up grate and it sandwiches around the spokes pretty well, should I change this or just keep running it?
