19 year old here. Transferring to Indiana University in the Fall - lots of hills and I'm taking my bike (Mongoose aluminum mountain bike). I just bought a Craftsman 18inch chainsaw at the local flea market, and I hope to make a direct chain drive with it to the front wheel. I understand that the chainsaw spins >8000rpm and I will have to reduce that by at least 12 times. With me on acceleration duty, I'd like the bike to be able to hold me above 40mph, but at IU, I'd settle for a ratio better for hills (which means more reduction, if I can do it).

Never ridden a motored bike before, just a few mopeds.

Welcome!
I would suggest a mounting over the rear wheel. I think I may do similar mounting with a weed eater engine that I have on a bag rack or something similar. I suggest reading the FAQ type thread. I found a ton of helpful info there!

Hi ZMX. Welcome to MBc!
I also would suggest rear rack mount. This vendor on the left may give you some ideas.
