For those of you who are interested, here are some progress pics of the vintage/boardracer style bike iRide is building.

I mostly just worked on the tank today...

I worked on it today until my back just wouldn't let me anymore. Hopefully I will get the other side on tomorrow.

The thumbnails are the same pics as above, I just gave the short description on the above links so you would know what's going on in the pic.

Nice Job!

A man in his shop doing what he loves; BEST MEDICINE in the WORLD!

Ok, here's what I got so far. It's not a replica of an old board racer and it was never meant to be an exact copy. It only "represents" the era with a little mordern flair.

The tank is done except for the sealant. The gussets are still waiting to be welded on. The cardboard under the engine will be pieces of aluminum that will represent a crankcase. The cardboard behind the seat is what I want the toolbox to look like. That may come later...just because it takes so long to build something like that.

Here's the pictures I promised...

A man and his tools is an awesome thing to behold. You can be proud of your creation you captured the look of a classic. Have fun, Dave

How exactly do you build your tanks?
I saw the pieces formed and tacked every couple inches, what did you do after that?

I am attempting to build a tank myself (it's pretty much done now) but it turned out rather wrinkly. Yours turn out WAY better than mine did. Mine should hold fuel, but I've since heard a couple different ways to do it "correctly", I'm curious what steps you use....

Thanks guys! I sure have enjoyed this build so far.

First let me say nothing I do can or should be considered "the correct way" of doing anything...I have had zero training on anything. All that I do has been self taught over the last 3 or so years since I first picked up a welder and started building bikes. I just do what works for me.

I tack it together and then I simply weld between the tacks. You have to be extremely careful not to over heat the metal and cause the wrinkles. I weld one spot of about 1.5'' between tacks, turn the tank over, weld another 1.5'', find another spot far away from the other welds and do another 1.5''. After about 3 or 4 welds I stop welding and get the grinder out to smooth all the wleds I have just done. This gives the metal a chance to cool down. You can repeat this a few times before you just have to walk away from it for an hour or so to let it cool completely. It is a very long, tedious process but it pays to take your time. I also use 16g. steel which is pretty beefy for this application.

Large Filipino,

It's going to be redish and black.

Man where do I get a bike body like that.. =)
Nice. I may have to try to cut up a bike or 15 to make something like that. and maybe 40years of thinking how in the **** well I do that..
Nice job. Keep up the good work. Keep us posted
