I read grapes of wrath last year and I'm always reminded of this when I drive past great big manicured lawns.
"Jesus, what I could do with that, with five acres of that! Why, hell, I'd have ever'thing to eat..." I can't find the other call backs to it but the land goes from 5 to 1 acre, then an acre to just the dooryard.
Very powerful writing. It holds up. Yeah, it's "liberal" but how can you watch people starve next to fallow land and not be mad? How can you watch people get kicked around and treated less than while apartments and hotels sit vacant? How can you watch people struggle to find work that can support themselves let alone a family, because it won't make money?
