I wanted to go grab a couple things from the grocery store today. The temperature here went up to 52°f. I decided to ride. The store is just a few blocks away. I took the side streets, so it was all up and down hills. Coming back home I missed a turn and went up one of the steepest hills around here. The engine was struggling even with me pedaling. It was about to stall. I stood up and was pedaling hard. Almost to the top of the hill now. It stalled, abrupt stop, and I tipped over. I almost made it. I wasn't hurt. Just a little scrape on the hand. The bike is OK. Just scraped the handgrip and the clutch lever. I will stay off of that hill from now on.

My body keeps reminding me that I'm no spring chicken. Didn't notice at first, but apparently I hurt something in my hand. Feels like a tendon

Sounds like you did good and kept your hands on the bars and your feet on the pedals when you fell over.
Good MTB technique, let the bars and pedals absorb most of the shock.
