Sticky float needle, clean it out or replace. The next time it happens, tap on the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver and then try starting it again.

You might be bumping your choke lever it rises engine performance drops and sputters.
I had that happen to me few times worried me sick until got to the end of the ride push the choke lever back down. I now use small bungee cord strap the b**ch down.
