M48 rebuild no start

65 jet starts right up but idles very high. I removed the throttle cable from the grip just to make sure it's not stuck I don't think it is.
Could it be that modified carb slide you installed with the air holes drilled thru it. Try putting your stock carburetor slide back in. Them holes/notches in slide is basically a controlled air leak.

I'll check that in a little bit. My head's killing me from the smell of the exhaust and starting fluid burning 🥵. But I really appreciate your guys' help. I wonder why it didn't start, after I put some starting fluid now it's starting up so easily

might be getting a little old here but I'm not peddling like I used to when I was a kid and it's a pain in the butt.
Welcome to my world...lol...I had moved from Boston to Big Bear Lake California to finish up my high school and enter college in Cali...lol...Big Bear Lake is a 14 mile long lake that is a little over 6000 ft elevation...I could pedal my bike the whole 28 miles from start to finish at 16 yrs old and hardly break a sweat...lol...Now I don't even want to pedal for 28 ft...lol...That sucker had best start for me after 3 strokes of the pedal now...lol...Thank God for motorised bikes...lol...What a difference 51 more years can make on the body...lol...I'm now 67.5 years old now...lol.

Now we know it's NOT a timing issue, it's a carb issue. Wet plug says too much fuel, put your old slide back in and make sure the cable opens it freely and completely. Just look inside as you operate the throttle, with it's location, you may need a mirror.

Starting fluid isn't very good for a 2t engine, I use a plastic soda bottle with a small hole drilled through the cap and a piece of fuel line inserted, then good two cycle mix.

I did what you said and it started but it dies. Even though I opened up the valve. It runs with the choke on I think I have to up jet. Merry Christmas
Having it die is expected, there is no fuel supply to the carb. You just wanted to eliminate a timing issue.

Run it with the choke on for a few minutes and let it warm up before you take off the choke.

I change the out the carb
slide. Put a 55 jet. It's not idling high anymore. I have the idle screw basically all the way turned out so a jet still might be a little bit too big. Let it warm up. Shut it off and it started without the fluid.

That sounds good, did test drive and see if you get over 8? Do have an exhaust for it?

I haven't tested it yet. Wanted to button up a few things. I do have an exhaust which will probably be last thing I do.
I just tried starting it with our starting fluid. I don't want to keep using that. When I do use it which I didn't this time it starts right away. I know I'm getting fuel to the carburetor. Where do I go from here? Could it be the reeds?

Are the reeds factory? Just check them over and make sure the petals aren't cracked.

You're right though, just button it up and put the exhaust on before you go any further. The tune will change once it's muffled.

Yea getting old sucks. I'm trying to avoid it but it's not working.
