Making Head Gaskets: Question.

Is there anything wrong with making a head gasket extra large so the gasket acts as another cooling fin? Is this ok to do, or is this likely to cause gaps due to flexing of the material that isn't under compression between the head and jug?

It's more of a hazard. Your only gonna cut your arm or hand on the thin metal.
Sure the metal will have some heat transfer but it ain't gonna be much to make a difference.

But what I have seen done is to (make) use a piece of aluminum plate bigger than the exhaust and intake manifolds to have cooling fins there.
 
If you want to improve cooling, get a Dremel and cut small slots about 1 or 2 mm wide, 1 or 2mm deep and 2mm apart all the way around all the cooling fins of the cylinder. Cooling takes place on the surface of the engine so by increasing the surface area, you effectively increase the cooling ability of the engine....
