How do you suggest I check for air leaks

I’d say a compression test.

Piston is installed properly, get someone to line the rings up with the pins and install.

That's the exhaust side, it won't keep it from starting. Put the ring gaps over the pins before you put the jug back on. The bottom ring's pin is on the other side.

So the gaps in the piston rings are supposed to be there? just in a proper position? The pins are facing the carb side not the exhaust, the arrow is facing the exhaust.

How much of a gap is left if you squeeze the rings together? Looks good from here.

about 1/16th inch, rings are on pins now and piston back inside.
