Nebraska Motorized Bicycle Laws - License Required & Registration Not Required

In Nebraska a motorized bicycle is defined as a moped. A moped is any vehicle that:
  • Is operated with either its 50cc or less motor OR by pedals (human power).
  • Maximum 2bhp.
  • Can not go faster than 30mph.

License

You need a license in Nebraska to ride a motorized bicycle as long as it fits within the definition of a moped above.

Registration

You don't have to title or...

It'll be legal until one of these idiots crack their skull on the concrete. Then we'll have to regulate them.

This is wrong, you have to have a driver's license.
It is also wrong to be making a statement without citing your sources for this comment of yours.

Are there any new laws since 2019 in Nebraska that has changed what was previously known???...If so, please cite your source information from your States DMV as related to 50cc or less motorised bicycle laws that would now apply.

What is written below is what we knew of as of 09/21/2019 when it was last affirmed as still the law by one of our members who is also from Omaha, @Karl Snarl.

You will need to cite from your Motor Vehicle Department of your state as proof in order for us to change this as I had to do below for my state of New Mexico.

We had to change it for my state since at one time you did need a license and registration etc...Laws in my State of New Mexico were changed in 2017 which I successfully pointed out using my states DMV as proof and it now reads as follows for my state.

Section E. Motorized Bicycles

Revised November 30, 2017

Motorized Bicycles are not considered to be mopeds or motorcycles.

By current MVD practice, motorized bicycles are considered to be bicycles (not mopeds or motorcycles) and are not subject to the titling and registration requirements of the Motor Vehicle Code.

My "Brother Moderator" on this forum, @ImpulseRocket will hopefully chime in as well since he is also in Omaha, Nebraska and is usually quite adept in keeping up with these type of things.
He is right. To operate a Moped on public roads in Nebraska you are required to have an Operators License. Our laws are written kind of stupidly, so any vehicle, no matter what it is, technically requires a drivers license if it is operated on public streets.

That said, most cops here don't give a crap. You will only ever find this out the hard way if you are doing something incredibly stupid.

As I mentioned to @wolfo_68, we really need to be able to quote from some sort of DMV / MVD official document so that either I or Anton can update the forum site where Anton originally posted this in 2016.

Well, I can dig all of it up for you. It's laws that span back to 1943 😅

The only exemption Mopeds get here is not having to be titled or registered for road use.
