if you have the standard carb then take the float bowl off and take the slide out and run the bare wire from a bread twist-tie into the main jet hole to clear it of possible obstructions.
make sure the float works in that it allows fuel in when the float is down and it stops fuel flow when up.
 
So I got it to run aloy better. Made adjustments to needle valve. Now can't get an idle. Screw doesn't do anything. Now what?
 
If the screw doesn't do anything it means you didn't put the slider barrel in properly it must go in with the slanted groove pointing exactly at the screw and the other side slides over a little pin inside.
 
Yeah if it still acts Iradically probably an air leak , also check the slot side for any dings might cause it to bind
 
New head gasket, new intake gasket, new exhaust gasket. Torqued right. Think I'm gonna get a new carb
