You could make the base gasket from a cereal box pretty easy using your current one as a template, I'd make a few so that you ensure proper clearance with a squish check, better safe than sorry!

Put a piece of paper over the base and use pencil to trace it out.

If your base gasket is broken you need to fix it or get a new one, that has to be sealed or you won't have enough compression.

If the base gasket is smashed too much maybe that is why you are not getting enough clearance on the head, perhaps you just need to replace it with a new one, or possibly put two on.

Well, alot of people make their own, best to use gasket material but you can get it cheap. It's possible to make head gaskets too, they are made of aluminum.
