New York Motorized Bicycle Laws

New York Motorized Bicycle Regulations

That list is not telling the whole list I have a Wildfire bike and it is not included. Mine is going to be renewed 3 times this April with the NY DMV.

yes they read very uptight. but i have rarely seen anyone getting into big trouble. at the most i knew one guy getting a $42 ticket and a court date. i am from the new york city and these pack riders are not like a registered club but still a good group of kids riding together. they have a good sense of togetherness. I call them 0%ers as they ride like outlaw motorcycle clubs but they are not on motorcycles. but since they are on two wheels and riding something that is outlawed, i call them 0%ers. in my eyes they are outlaws. if i ever start a MB club i'll get back patches for all the members that will read 0%ers but right now i have to get my chopper bike done. if anyone wants to start a MB club called 0%ers at their location feel free to but let me know also so we can hammer out the details. i am pretty Serious about this 0%ers Mb club and brotherhood thing. another thing is that whenever I start a MB club here at New york city named 0%ers, you will have to count us as your NYC chapter. c'mon wouldnt it be great to have brothers of the same family all over and people give us big recognition. its a big dream but if we all MB riders stand together we can make it happen in just a little time. thanks all.
Hey mind if I borrow that? Will give you credit if we do that. Me and a buddy are from upstate New York. In the process of getting a motorized bond as my friend has one and we might form a little group like this.

I'll join I live in utica n.y and know a few ppl with peddle assisted motors 1 electronic and mine and this guy I work with is gas. I've been trying to get ppl into the wave.

All though ny state has a ban on riding them unregisterd and unliscenaed different towns say otherwise ..for instance i have a standard 26 inch moutain bike with a 49 cc 2stroke motor kit ..i called chief of police here in waverly ny and he says as long as i keep it governed under 31mph and my engine is 50cc or less i can ride through town as long as traffic laws are followed , have to wear a helmet , i need to have atlease 1 mirror , must have turning signal and brake light and must register it as a standard bicycle at police dept ..no drivers liscense .registration or any normal driving paperwork or plate is required ...now if i go over town line into another town or state such as sayre pa i have to shut motor off and pedal through said area...do to having to have all dmv required documents ..so it is hit or miss on were u can and cant operate the motor assist but always a possibility of having random towns aprove them ...

Actually PA has provisions that exempt you from requiring anything because your vehicle is considered legal on your state and requires no registration or anything and as long as you use it most of the time in your state (or just not within the state of PA as they say it) then they have no legal overhang on you.

That means of you are showing up maybe twice a month in this town and have a NY state ID, then they don't have anything to say to you because the state specifically exempt you from needing anything at all while temporarily traveling through or visiting for a short time.

It's like right at the top of the state code under vehicle registration and exceptions, there's a few lines that are the same regarding the need to have a driver's license or not, it's basically saying your state is the rule maker and the state or PA has nothing to do with it unless you had a vehicle that required plates or tags in your state.

Your free as it gets in this instance. Any other outcome is an embarrassing predicament for a Pennsylvania law enforcement officer.

Here is a list of NYS "approved" Class C mopeds which do not require inspection because you are limited to 20mph. I don't think they require insurance either? Why can't I take a motor/ lights/ VIN tag off of one, put it on my ten-speed and register it? You didn't get this from me!!!

Because it's highly illegal and too easy to do since the dmv is a brainless mush that only needs documents to process all your illegal outsmartedness. Nobody will check to see if you're lying about anything which makes it especially evil and immoral and easy to pull off.

Here's what I've found. You have to register with DMV as a moped or else it's ILLEGAL! "Motorized bicycles" are ILLEGAL. "Mopeds" are legal if registered and insured, inspected, and you are wearing a DOT helmet.

Here's the stuff about mopeds:
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/dmanual/chapter11-manual.htm

Here's the info about motorized bicycles:

There's my first post!

Hope it helps.

So if we see Josh Warrick in the New York Times obituary section we'll know what happened to him, shot and killed by NYPD for riding an illegal moped that was a little too loud for local sound ordinances.
