1 Retire Your Ride. A federal government-sponsored program that gives $300 cash for a 1995 or older vehicle, providing it's still running and has been licensed and insured for the road for at least the last six months.

Trade in the clunker for a new vehicle and Chrysler, Ford, GM, Hyundai and Volkswagen will give up to $3,000 off the purchase price, depending on make and model.

Instead of cash, you can opt for discount coupons ranging from $350 to $490 on the purchase of a high-tech commuter bicycle or $450 on a motorized bike (see www.retireyourride.ca for details).
