Actually, rewinding a coil or motor is done all the time
Usually to stuff that would be to expensive to replace or it's not available any more. So rewinding is the best or only option.

But I do see your point why not save some time and trouble and buy one for $8
 
The wires on these coils are 30 awg and wrapped 3800 times for the older standard wire loop/magneto and the newer TZ's have 4700 turns of 28 awg, they ohm read at 320-336 for the original ones and around 305 for the TZ's, the direction of wrapping it doesn't really matter as the start is grounded to the frame and some are on the bottom some on the top side so I don't think it makes a difference.
