I think I found a way to live with the tensioner. Braised on a threaded coupler, tapped it to 8mm and used a threaded shaft bearing tensioner. Put a slot in the side of tensioner to screw it on......OK so far.
Now the chain doesn't hit the bottom of the brake assembly and I can run any size sprocket I want.
