Police in Sydney, Australia

According to Zbox the output of the 48cc is 1200W and the 66cc at 1700W
So yes, maybe a grey area. So please all you aussie's ride responsibly and lets not make ourselves an issue.

200 watts?

200 watts is .375 hp. Less than half of 1hp. The average healthy human is 1.5 hp. Remember. HP or watts is the rate of work and not the actual power. Since the rating is 200watts, you would have to use a large sprocket which will lower the watts or hp of the motor and increase the torque. I must say, 200watts would only be around 5-10 mph or so. Wow !!! Not sure I would enjoy the ride at that slow speed...

My heater at home is 2000W.
I see 200W as an irrelevant law as its not stated in cc.

In a city (Sydney) thats promoting bicycle riding, it would be hypocritical
not to allow engines on bikes, as its the next logical step for many people.
(injured, older, lazy...)

One member here told me he got pulled over by the police,
he said he had a 35 cc Zbox motor showed him the below RTA printout,
and the Zbox spec.
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/otherinformation/scootersminibikes.html?rlid=6

He was told he'd have to walk the bike the 20km home, and take
it to the RTA for an inspection.
No ticket, No fine.

You can imagine how far he walked the bike...
I regularly see police cars, who would be able to see me.
So far I've not been stopped.

I now carry the above paper-work with me whenever I ride.
Seems like the only defence, against moronic laws is to be aware
of what they are.

For warned is for armed.

Where do I get a copy of the Zbox spec for the 35cc engine? :)

When is a bicycle no longer a bicycle?

Ok, I found this interview with a spokesperson from the RTA of NSW
from June 18 2008, so its current to us.

http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2008/06/19/2279720.htm

Given motorised bicycles get zero media attention, its an interesting issue for us.

The key thing I found here is that the RTA is looking to clarify this issue,
so its interesting times ahead.

Seems like the RTA and police have been saying things are legal that
haven't been. Such as Ebikes, but there's also talk about the engine
size limits and what is or isn't legal.

Shes a spokeperson for the Roads and Traffic Authority and she has no clue about motor's.
Thats like a school teacher saying they know nothing about books.

Oh well, at least someone's asked the RTA the question,
even if they can't answer it properly right now. :devilish:

here's another article I just found about the E-bike...

ebikes

hey guys,
not really any grey areas.
the law does state that its 200W max but thats not all.
I was recently booked for riding an ebike with 180 watts of power & based on a recent supreme court ruling, i lost!
I was not given any penalty under section 10, 1 (a) of the crimes sentancing procedure act.
ebikes are now shown on the rta website as a restricted item
the reason for this is that it can be ridden soley under the power of the motor & is not therefore an auxillary motor as required by law

the view from the police is simple, if it looks like a motor bike then it will be treated as a motorbike
if you are going fast you may raise concerns.
the Zbox motors are illegal in NSW and probably always will be
if you keep it quiet and at a normal speed you should be ok.
the law also says that its illegal regardless if its turned on or not, if its attached it becomes part of the bike.
good luck
