Hi. I've been attempting to research and diagnose this issue for a couple weeks now, and just can't seem to figure it out. My son was riding the bike for about an hour, still in break-in motor process. I know he wasn't going too fast or abusing it with my wife having "stalker app" on his phone (actually life 360 but whatever). While riding the bike, all of a sudden the rear tire completely locked up and couldn't get it to rotate.

Here's what I've looked into so far, with what I think at least the basics being covered. I will also admit I'm far from being a mechanic but know the basics and am learning from this forum and overall experience.
  • The rear brakes are not locked onto the wheel. If only that simple!!
  • Ensured that the chain is not kinked on the sprocket.
  • I removed the chain from the motor to ensure it wasn't the hub, but wheel spins when that's off.
  • I took the spark plug out and still won't turn at all either direction.
  • Removed the clutch cover, took the start nut off, and from "my highly trained eyes" (ha!!) don't see anything glaringly obvious. Like like not major amounts of dust, or anything that seems broken. No idea really though.
  • I confirmed that it appears the clutch can disengage when pushing the clutch handle, then seeing the clutch move.
A part of me wonders if the engine overheated and seized? We have rode it first on small trips then let it cool off. It certainly wasn't his first ride but maybe? YouTube videos haven't given me any more clues from what I've found. Sorry to be a bit long winded here, but absolutely appreciate your guidance!! My 16 yr old son has been REALLY enjoying it esp. given no car yet, and I would love to try it more than just up and down the street.

Will the wheel spin when the clutch is disengaged?

Post pictures. Rim brakes or coaster brake? How is the rear sprocket attached? For all that you wrote it's no where near enough information to diagnose the cause of the problem.

I say, "Off with its Head"! You won't damage it any taking the head off for an inspection.

When you looked at the clutch, was the two gears meshing together smoothly?

Nope.

It's a Phantom 85 v3. We have been running it at ~ 3/4 throttle, but who knows if it was run at more. Speeds were less than 20 mph. It has the typical bike brakes with pads on the rims.

was the two gears meshing together smoothly?

Good question that I am not sure of at this point.

Using 3.2 oz 2 cycle engine oil per 1/2 gallon for the break-in period. Yes, that's where I purchased the motor from preassembled.

Tell me your not just pouring the gas and then the oil in the tank to mix and use it.

It needs to be mixed in a gallon gas container so it can be vigorously shaken before being poured into the gas tank and then used.

6.4 ounces to one gallon of gasoline is correct but NEVER just mix it in the tank as it will not be consistently mixed and will not oil the critical moving parts properly that way.
