Hello,

I am in the process of restoring my Whizzer and the rims of the bike are quite rusty. I have the choice to have them chromed or to buy others. buying would others probably cost me less.

Are the rims that are made today the same as the old bikes?

Thanks

If I could get them electroplated for less than modern replacements I would do that. The vintage wheels will be heavier.

Is this a vintage bike or a Taiwan? bike from the reissue of 1999 to 2009? If vintage, what MFG bike is it? Do you want to maintain "Correct" period or look? If so, then used vintabe bike parts on Ebay or https://thecabe.com/

If repop, then good heavy duty replacements can be purchased from Worksman Cycles. http://worksman.com/ Wrench (here on the forum) replace his with their heavy duty wheels. I plan on doing the same with my repop. I have chrome Schwinn s-2 heavy rims on my 1948 Whizzer

I have an old Chieftain bike. But I don't know what year.

Have you tried to clean the rust off with steel wool and wd40? I have a 70s bike I restored because I liked the way it looked, the frame was just covered in surface rust, and so was all the chrome, I cleaned the chrome and frame with steel wool and wd40. It works wonders sometimes.

Go to the CABE link I sent you . Go to forum on restoring tips and workshop. They have all kinds of ways to restore bikes. Evaporust works great and can be reused. From total rusty to this:

Rims can be removed andsoaked in Evaporust (Gallons) in a small kiddie pool or farm tub.

Hi,
Your rims are called, Drop center rims.
I'd have them powder coated the cream color, with the black pin strip. Spokes look to be 105's 10" 1/2 long. Get the stainless steel ones. Back hub looks to be the morrow hub good!

Look for Huffman bikes, serial numbers.
Your serial number should be at the bottom bracket, bottom of your crank.
