running no lower muffler, any downsides?

Just watch out that it is not running too lean now. You may see a loss in mileage (more drips coming out of the exhaust). Gut the exhaust (remove baffles) and weld the cap back on. It'll be louder than stock, improve performance some and might work as a ghetto expansion chamber.
