a few years back, just because I liked the way they looked, I bought a couple welding jackets: one was a full jacket, made of what is called "chrome tanned" leather (it's a tough suede) and the other is the same leather, but just the sleeves and the upper chest.
Since it is still summer here, and still hot, wearing a full leather jacket would be quite uncomfortable, but wearing something like the half jacket, with reinforced elbows, would be more protection than shirt-sleeves and still be cool.
