Belts tend not to damage their sheaves when they wear out, unlike chains. Wear just propagates with chains.
Worn chains damage sprockets, which damages new chains. Typical derailleur chain replacement is every 500-750 miles and that's with just pedal power. Most people running these things don't replace their chains anywhere near that often.
Rackmount and belt has a very long life, especially if you keep the belt treated.
The biggest problem with a mid-drive and rear sheave is clearing the chainstay with the belt, which are always wider than a chain and sit on a larger diameter drive ring. Clearance depends on frame, tire width, and sheave size ofc. Whizzers run that setup and if you look at the chainstay on the LHS of most Whizzers you see some sort of kink in it or additional spread to accommodate the belt run and/or sheave itself.
Compromise as befits your modest circumstances. Or cut, grind, and weld it all into submission.
