I don't run a metal gasket on some bikes. depends on the deck. little copper rtv, or indian head and its all good. heck even aluminum paint works well as a head gasket.

Then i would say that it had a gasket leak due to lack of re-torqueing the head to 12 ft pds, (144 Inch pds)...DAMIEN

tht is the gap where the gasket over hangs in the jug a bit. it catches all the goodies and lets em build up. lol
That encrusted crap needs to be removed...lol...DAMIEN

Wow man come on guy's this is ridicules. Two people saying a worn out cylinder is ok and that the carbon build up is fine and from over hanging gasket LOL. The poster asked about his head (shark type) which is not high compression and has a 1mm lip adding clearance above the deck height which when on a stock engine that can have upto 1.5 mm between the crown and the deck lowers the compression. There will also be over 2 mm of squish clearance that contributes to the carbon build up gasket over hang or not (which should be not!) because there is nothing displacing the end gasses into the chamber and full burn does not occur.

I always clean everything that comes apart. In that area, especially if it's crusty black stuff. That stuff will cause detonation and run on.
