Carby simple question about carb mounting

This may be a stupid question but Ill ask anyway.

Will the engine start with the carb sideways?

Im hoping no as that may explain why my engine will refuse to start.

If you can get the engine to start while mounted sideways, you are the man. (no, the engine shouldn't start while mounted sideways, there's a float in there to regulate fuel level in the bowl so carb needs to be upright)
