Spark or other issues causing engine not to start

I don't have a bike stand but do have one of those exercise bike rollers that I might be able to use. Will try that.

It certainly hasn't been dark when testing for spark. I have a single car garage with a project car on jack stands, so that makes it more of a challenge. Good to know and will find a darker place or do it at night to test the spark.

I haven't tried quick start, but good idea.

Even up the magneto gap.

Figured this out and now much better.

REALLY appreciate the help! I've been working on this darn thing for way too long now. Have learned a lot but didn't expect it to be this challenging! I so want to get this running!

This is how it's currently installed. One video showed it rotated 90 degrees with a slit pointing to the 1 pm position which I don't see on this cap. Maybe hard to tell from this picture, but the top had more gap than the bottom. I also got that much closer to be the same top and bottom.

Ohms is around 360 so that seems good.

I took the magneto coil off, sanded it to ensure there was nothing on it, but still won't start. Wondering if there was too much fuel, turned off the choke, turned off the fuel flow and disengaged the clutch while riding it. Engine didn't attempt to start then. Tried turning choke back on to about 90% and fuel on, nothing. ARGH!!!

Spark update: I was able to put the bike on a stand and darker conditions, and am getting spark.

Under the carb, I pressed the button up to ensure there was fuel and it had the right mix of fuel / oil. Looks good.

But still won't start. Now that I've done all this, maybe I just need to try is several times? But I'm tired and hot now lol.

I've had a couple that I had to ride down hill and walk back up several times before it would start. If you have a fairly flat area to try it on, get it up to a good pedaling speed, let out the clutch and keep pedaling.

1. Turn off fuel switch
2. take off carb bowl and dump out any gas that's in there
3. Re install and turn fuel on
4. try to start it again, preferably down a big hill if possible

^^this would help if it were flooded

Was it a half-moon shape?

Yes it is. I don't see where it should go if it's supposed to be there. None of the videos I've watched make any mention of it either.

Tried the hill approach as well. It's not even trying to start so have to believe something else is being missed. Having a friend come over on Sunday who has a similar bike and is more mechanical than we are.

Oh, even tried using a long rope and pulled the bike slowly with a car. My wife wasn't home to stop the dump guy idea, and it pretty much worked out like you're thinking.

When that small bit of metal fell out when you removed the magnet, did you get a look at it? Was it a half-moon shape?

It goes on the shaft with the magnet to keep it in time. Your engine is likely very out of time without the key.
It is not going to start without that woodruff key in place on the magneto that you took off and sanded etc.

Someone will be along soon I hope to help you get it back in time again by first getting your piston in the proper position and then replacing that key again in its One O'clock position back on that spinning shaft and stator again so you can have the timing restored.

In the meanwhile it is NOT going to run whatsoever without the timing being fixed so stop trying...lol.
