Spark or other issues causing engine not to start

We got it running and rode it a bit, but still not running as it should be. But a huge step forward for sure. Ended up swapping the wires to the cdi and then it started. Really odd. Lots of playing around with the carb setting and it got better, just not right though. I'll have to try adjusting the timing and continue to learn.

Thank you very much for all of the help and advice!!!

They tend to run poorly at first. Just take it easy for a while, let it run in for a couple tanks.

I think you missed seeing this answer of mine when he acknowledged that the woodruff key popped out and was not reinserted before putting it back together...The OP hasn't said if he did or did not put the woodruff key back in place...Only that he keeps fiddling around with everything else to just have it run at all and very poorly at that.

I think you know as well as I do what will happen to that motor if he keeps trying to run it that way.

Since the motor won't run without the key and I have it running, I somewhat assumed you knew I put it back in. Seeing the massive grin while my 16 yr son drove by us on the bike was worth the effort.

That's good to know Robe. It rides fine on flat roads but tends to die on hills right now. Maybe I should stop trying to chase the carb tuning and what some do with timing adjustments till I get through a few tanks. I also wouldn't say it runs very poorly, just not as well as we'd like it to.

Why is a key shaped like a half moon?
A. So it doesn't move in or out on the shaft.

Lateral stability. Having a larger area of keyway deeper into a fitted shape slot on the shaft means the key is far less prone to rocking too.
And a longer key is less likely to shear, I still don't know how a ninth of a HP can shear a key. Must be rotten keys.

He said it was running. I thought it was back together with key installed. Ya!
