does anyone know how much power a sturmey archer 3 speed can handle with reliability?
I have read that the old ones are much better
I am only looking at about 2 horse power
and don't want to use one if they might break down a lot

If you want dependability with multi geared freewheels and internal geared hubs you have to work on a technique where you start from a stand still and shift gears both gradually and smoothly.

I would like to use the sturmey archer as a jack shaft.. sort of the way they are used on adult trikes
my question is about how strong they are
can they reliably handle 2 horse power??
when used with reasonable care

Not sure how much power they can reliably handle, but I do know that neutral is (annoyingly) between 2nd and 3rd. I chose a shimano nexus 3 speed hub, has a little bit more range than the sturmey archer.

It isn't a question of power but torque.
Yes using an IGH in between the engine and wheel will be better because the RPM can be higher there than at the wheel hub, therefore torque will be lower. It's also going to be a heck of a lot easier to replace or omit if it does break.

I use the sturmy 3 spd hub on my new backheel with a js setup, no problems yet.

On the other forum there is a member cannonball 2 that uses that hub as you want to. He has it mounted to the seat post and still running power to the rear wheel on the left side. He seems to like it

Do you have a link? Had pics of his setup on the old phone but ran it over with a skid steer lol.

Note that if you chose to use the regular Sturmey hubs as a jackshaft you won't be able to pedal start them. They have internal freewheels.

That's why Cannonball2 used the fixie or track 3 speed version. He's been running a Zeda 80 adapted to a Stihl 61 cc pumper carb through his, and it's been holding up fine. I'm taking WAG it's a bit more than 2 h.p.

I like cannonball2 idea with that. I ordered one of those carbs after reading through the thread. Waiting on delivery to figure out how I will fit it.
