Yeah you can deck a CG cylinder if you make a holding fixture.

If you want to do it simpler, just dial in the face, clamp cylinder with small aluminum blocks, 4 jaw it for more holding area. Saves building a fixture.

Yeah I was being lazy & didnt want to swap his 3jaw for the 4jaw chuck, plus I think his chucks weight more that me.

3 jaw reverse step jaws chuck should work fine. I occasionally use the one at work to do something round. mainly just truing a face. Same thing as decking a cylinder though. Not like you are trying to dig into it. Just taking a mil or two off.
