Wanting to add charging to my drive by wire bike, and I thought: while I'm at it let's play with gas-electric hybrids. I want to directly couple a face-mounted brushless-motor to the roller, ideally with a simple keyed shaft instead of a half round shaft or complex splines. A little 350 watt motor with bearings that handle 7k rpm and the KV to use 48v ought to play nice.

Thinking about a small lead acid starting battery, 48v, tiny ampacity.

Maybe you could get David to make you one of these hybrid gearboxes. Then it could be taken to the input right side of a 5 speed IGH and the output left side of the IGH can drive the left side of the left rear wheel.

I like where your head is at, Jerry. IIRC Staton is not making anything new though. I'll look on his site, I like the idea of the drive by wire combined with a shifter set up. I believe I would need an "inside drive"

You know there's replacement planet gear sets for the Bafang mid drives, if you could source the sun and ring gears you could possibly come up with some sort of Toyota Prius hybrid motor/engine transmission. Would need a substantially sized brushless outrunner motor for the engine to work against/through to have it be a pseudo electro-CVT drive. The nice bit is just one electric motor for drive and regeneration.

I had found a fellow that built a planetary transmission using chains and sprockets the saw way guys will repurpose toothed belts into large gears

Though David isn't making anything new, it doesn't take much to convert the gearbox to a hybrid box. If the price is right he may do it for you. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I had this thought for the hybrid. Use the Staton friction drive with a front hub drive. That's your cheapest route. You could use 2 hub motors one will act like a generator when using gas/gravity power. The rear hub/generator could power the the front hub while using gas/gravity power or put power back into the battery when the front hub wasn't being used.

These same concepts could also be used with the chain drive system through a 3 or 5 speed IGH. With either setups the still available inside gearbox could be used; no special hybrid gearbox needed.

There was a run of hub motors that could take the guts from a sturmey Archer 5 speed, but those are gone.

Realistically I really just need to accept the range limits of the battery because it will go longer than 10 hours. Just dreaming about a long distance set up, and friction drive doesn't help that unless it's a tour in a desert.

Biggest concern is weight, the kit is the same weight of the bike. It's a good 55 lbs all in.
