On my last set-up and the current rig, I used the spring-type thumb-throttle but decided there was a better way. Sinz makes a brake lever that is spring loaded and far more comfy and durable than the throttle style indicated above.
Sinz BMX Expert Brake Lever - red or black - is available on eBay and other sites for about $16. shipped. I acquired one from www.diamondedgesports.com .
The handlebar set is on a Burley recumbent bike, but the application is applicable to standard-sized handlebar sets.
