In some states they have what is known as the Idaho Stop for a pedal only bicycle and limited electric assist e-bikes. This law allows cyclist to treat a STOP 🛑 sign like a YIELD sign under certain conditions. If no traffic is within sight, the cyclist can slow to a 5 mph speed and proceed through the STOP 🛑 sign. Some places have similar laws for flashing red traffic lights as well. The reason behind this law is a cyclist can get back up to speed from a Rolling Start quicker than they can from a Complete Stop. A Complete Stop is defined as no forward momentum. Often you may see 2 wheeled vehicles come to a Complete Stop but almost immediately take off without even putting their feet on the road. This is actually legal provided they have the Right Of Way.

The Idaho STOP isn't legal in all states and definitely isn't legal for any vehicle operating under gas power. If the Idaho Stop is legal in your area the closet thing you could do to be legal is kill your engine while performing the Idaho Stop and restart it after you've cleared the Stop zone. Just be aware the Police 🚓 are often hiding in places so that they can see you but you can't see them. It much better to get into good habits of obeying traffic laws and avoid gray areas of the law.

The worst thing you can do is post such activities on public media platforms. Even if you are allowed to do Idaho Stops at your location and are killing your engine while doing it, many watching your video may not know what you're doing is legal in your area. Thus, projecting a negative image to some viewers concerning motorized bicycle riders.

You aren't allowed to operate any vehicle while using gas power on a shared pedestrian/cyclist sidewalks, path ways, trails, and greenways. It doesn't matter if you're the only one on it. Some locations will allow you to use designated bicycle lanes if you stay below a certain speed limit.

Ok I got a safety question lol.

So I bike on a bike trail. I think it's technically illegal, but I'm respectful and turn off the engine around people on foot and all that. People actually seem to enjoy seeing it.

Anyways, it's a paved trail on an old railroad track. So there's lots of roads and driveways crossing it now. Every.... Idk, at least every 1/2 mile. At each of these crossings is a stop sign for the bike trail. We live pretty rural, so there's not a lot of activity on these roads.

Should I come to a full and complete stop at every one? Cuz it's a pita to stop and get going again, and sometimes there's roads with stop signs within like 200 feet of each other. Normally I disengage the engine if it's a slow road, and disengage it and turn it off it's a proper highway, so I can hear. What do y'all do? I think this is actually more of a question of what is an acceptable illegal practice lol. So like, if I took a video and put it on here, and I was coasting through stop signs (carefully), would I get called out for unsafe practice lol?
Im in exactly the same situation. The Hauraki Rail trail is a major tourism drawcard around here. I use it all the time as it gets me into town via the scenic route. - There's always the chance of following a Lycra clad butt for a short distance. Im very respectful and I ride just as you do Johnny. My advice is just keep the noise and speed down around people and do as you like when there is nobody around. I have to behave because Im who they used in their advertising sign all over the region- Im 6'x 10' on all roads into town!
