Trent's Bikes- he is an awesome watch

Im in exactly the same situation. The Hauraki Rail trail is a major tourism drawcard around here. I use it all the time as it gets me into town via the scenic route. - There's always the chance of following a Lycra clad butt for a short distance. Im very respectful and I ride just as you do Johnny. My advice is just keep the noise and speed down around people and do as you like when there is nobody around. I have to behave because Im who they used in their advertising sign all over the region- Im 6'x 10' on all roads into town!
I have no idea what the laws may be in your country. Remembering the laws in 48 USA states is asking a lot for a senior 🧓 citizen lol. I do remember when laws got passed in Australia banning self-built motorized bicycles. They used reckless behaviors as the reason for banning them.

In the USA some places can be very lenient on their guidelines where other places can be extremely strict. You just have to know your area as to what you can do.

I do encourage riders not to post on public media's any questionable riding practices. This way we maintain a positive image of us so that we keep the right to operate our bikes on the public roadways.

Guys like Trent is a brilliant builder and a total idiot operator. Young people who have little political power see him as thrilling and exciting. Older people who do have lots political power see him as dangerously irresponsible and may eventually seriously injure or kill a completely innocent person(s).

This is why I try to emphasize to non-Americans that each State really should be looked at as if it is it's own country. Every state has it's own constitution, laws, government, economies, etc. It's the only way to really get them to understand the legal situation.

A great example would be Emissions regulations. California - strict as hell, has regular testing, has an entire police unit dedicated to it, and car makers even have to make special versions of cars because o it. My state (Nebraska) - Does it have lights that work, seat belts, and a windshield? Good to go! Go out into the real country of Nebraska and you will see people that have legally registered side by sides, ATV's, and even tractors.

My state Tennessee doesn't even have vehicle inspections like many other states do.

The only time a car is inspected here is when it is being registered for the first time when coming in from out of state. Even then, it's just a basic safety inspection.
Even that isn't required here.

Lol

Illegal or not, bikes against cars, you have to ask yourself, are you feeling lucky?

Contrary to popular belief, a 4 or more wheeled vehicle vs cyclist isn't always the fault of the larger vehicle. Though the video Damien posted shows a left hook along with some rear strikes, these aren't common events when the cyclist isn’t at fault. The most common event is side swipes when the cyclist isnt at fault. These are caused by cyclist riding to the Far Right in standard lanes (11') instead of using Lane Control. This entices larger vehicles to do a squeeze by on the cyclist instead of switching lanes to pass.

There isn't much that can protect you from reckless and/or unskilled drivers. However, using good cycling techniques and obeying traffic laws can greatly reduce the chances of being in a multi-vehicle collision.

Be aware/alert
Be seen
Be predictable
