Hello everyone,

I am starting my first build, which I will make a separate thread for, but in the mean time had a question about wheel building and spoke/hub/rim compatibility. I am planning on building a 26" rear wheel with a double wall alloy Wienmann rim and a heavy duty disc compatible 36 spoke rear hub (these are on their way now). The rim came drilled for 13 gauge spokes, while the hub came drilled for 12 gauge spokes. I originally planned on drilling out the rim holes to accommodate 12 gauge spokes, but after doing some reading it appears that 12 gauge is too thick for proper tensioning and winds up with a less structurally sound wheel.

My next thought was to use DT Swiss Alpine III spokes, which I believe are 13 gauge at the hub and 14 gauge at the rim. Since the hub is drilled for 12 gauge, can it successfully take a 13 gauge? Likewise for the rim, since it is drilled for 13 gauge will it take a 14 gauge? Or am I just better off building the wheel with 12 gauge spokes as originally planned?

Thanks
